Every day is full of surprises when you work with little ones. Sometimes children see the world very differently from adults! That can lead to some interesting conversations. At one point I was teaching group of children of different ages. Part of our daily routine was to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
I knew that some of the words in the pledge were unfamiliar, so I thought it would be a good idea to go through it and talk about what it meant. When I came to the word liberty, I began to explain that the word meant we are all free. I was opening my mouth to explain more about what it means to be free, when I was interrupted by a child frantically waving her hand.
I stopped to see what she needed to tell me. Indignantly she announced, “I’m NOT free! I’m four!” That ended the discussion as everyone had to join in and tell me that they weren’t “free” either.
I’ll bet every teacher has had a similar experience with misunderstood words. We’d love to hear your stories!
